Snowy Morning

Snowy Morning

Finally, the real snow has arrived. This morning Tahoe is covered in a blanket of snow at least 2-feet deep, and it’s still snowing.

Alpine Meadows, Opening Weekend

December 6, 2009

Alpine Meadows Opening Weekend

It was a bitterly cold morning just watching the die-hard skiers and snow boarders get their first taste of skiing for the season. The snow was being whipped-up by a turbulent and gusty wind as the photo captures.

Early afternoon Alpine Meadows closed its slopes as the first real winter storm that we have all been waiting for arrived and on-mountain visibility become virtually zero.

The Tahoe area weather forecast is snow for the next few days, perhaps the whole week, and right now there is a winter storm warning until Monday evening.

At last some real snow, let the skiing season truly begin!! 🙂

West (Sea)Shore

November 28, 2009

West (Sea)Shore

As this photo shows, today the Lake was more like an ocean! The waves were crashing against the West Shore and the wind was bitterly cold as it exercised the flag.

Even in such weather conditions, to what we would normally consider and perhaps prefer to see, the scene still shows how beautiful and contrasting Tahoe is.

Squaw Valley, Thanksgiving Morning

November 26, 2009

Squaw Valley, Thanksgiving Morning

Last Thanksgiving I took (roughly) the same photo of Squaw Valley so it was interesting to compare the two images. Last years photo (click here to view) shows that there was clearly less snow and the weather was very much overcast.

This year Squaw Valley is already entertaining the die-hard skies who are out there on the few slopes that are open. Let’s hope this is a good sign and that it will be an exceptionally great ski season.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tahoe Winter, It’s Arrived

November 21, 2009

Truckee River Winter Scene

The tree line beside the ice-covered Truckee River on HW89. I like how the trees are covered with the recent snow fall, the graduating tree tops (from left to right) and how the sun is illuminating some of the tree tops with a golden glow.

Just a little further from this spot there were two beavers sitting in a hole in the ice together. It was great to see them but unfortunately I did not have enough time to get a good photo before they disappeared through the ice down in to the cold Truckee River.

However, on the way back just as the sun was setting I captured the following scene from the Tahoe City shoreline. The sky was ignited by vibrant colors signalling the end to another great day in Tahoe.

Tahoe Sunset

I like the mood of this photo and especially the sky’s reflection along the rugged icy edge of the lake. It was a magical sunset. There are a couple more photos of the sunset posted on the Tahoe Photos Gallery, click the link below.

Commons Beach

November 12, 2009

Commons Beach

What a difference a couple of days can make.

Only Tuesday I posted a typical autumn scene with the yellow and orange colors and fallen leaves on the Commons Beach sidewalk in Tahoe City, not a stone’s throw from where this photo was taken first thing this morning.

As regards this photo, I like the overall mood and how the dark tree bark is in total contrast with the freshly snow-covered, white branches. And, in the distance you can see a storm over South Tahoe City.

Gradually the weather is getting colder and although this particular snow fall will not stay too long, we are expecting the frequency and amount of snow to increase as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday and in to early December.

Commons Beach Walk

November 10, 2009

Commons Beach WalkEarly morning in Tahoe City, the path beside Commons Beach makes a most relaxing and pleasant walk to clear the mind and prepare for the day, or get yourself ready for a little workout at the A Sante gym!

I continue to enjoy the colors that we have in Tahoe at this time of year. However, I have been traveling recently and missed some of the gradual changes but there is still enough around to get pleasure from as this photo confirms.

Marlette Flume Trail

Marlette Flume Trail

Marlette Flume Trail

As I have said many times Autumn is probably my favorite season in Tahoe. The change of colors, with the golden yellow and oranges ‘popping’ against the traditional green creates some awesome scenery.

This photo was taken on the Marlette Flume Trail, approaching from the Tunnel Creek Road end in Incline Village, this trail is also very popular for mountain bikers, so be warned! However, this time of year is just such an incredible time to do a hike, especially to see the colors of the Aspen.

I just love how this photo came out with the sunlight shining through the arch covered ceiling created by the Aspen and the fallen leaves randomly covering the path. Autumn is truly a great time for getting out and doing a hike or two before the snow arrives.

Chimney Beach Trail

Chimney Beach Trail

Chimney Beach Trail

The morning after our first snow.

A pleasant hike of about 4-miles along Chimney Beach Trail, on the East shore, takes you also around Secret Harbor and a number of smaller idylic alcove beaches.

This view is looking across the lake to the West shore where the fresh snow is covering the mountains.
